Words That Are Made Up

Take a look around the room you are sitting in right now.

Look at the object directly in front of you. Your mind instantly labels it: desk, phone, wall, chair, window.

The moment you label something, you stop seeing it. You see your concept of it instead. Every single label you use today is completely made up. What happens when you drop the vocabulary, pause the mind's commentary, and just meet the raw, nameless presence of reality directly?

By relying so heavily on words, we have dulled our everyday experience. The moment the mind names an object, it boxes it up, shelves it, and stops actually looking at it. We live in a translated copy of life, always one step removed from the living moment.

The Experiential Experiment

Let's break the script right now. You don't need to read about this; you can experience it immediately.

  1. Find a physical surface near you — the texture of your clothing, the smooth screen of your device, or the grain of a wooden table.
  2. Place your hand on it and close your eyes.
  3. Drop the words. Intentionally drop the label "cotton," "glass," or "wood." Drop the words "rough," "smooth," "warm," or "cold."
  4. Refuse to let your mind categorize what you are touching.
  5. Just feel it. Move your hands around and really feel.

For the next thirty seconds, just sit with the raw, vibrating tactile contact.

Notice that the physical sensation itself does not contain its name. The sensation is alive, direct, and completely nameless. When you strip away the vocabulary, what is left? You are left with a raw, unconstructed intimacy with the physical world. There is a profound, silent rest in realizing that reality does not need to be labeled to be complete. It is already here, perfectly whole, before the mind ever says a word. When the labels are gone, what are you touching without the label, and who is touching it? Who is sensing this label? Have we also labeled ourselves in this process?
